Understanding Your RPL Approval

Your RPL request has been approved — now what?

When you are awarded transfer credit (CR) or equivalency credit (EQ), it is important to understand the impact it may have on various aspects of your educational journey.

It is your responsibility to ensure that the total amount of RPL awarded will not:

  • Negatively affect your eligibility for funding or financial assistance
  • Impact your ability to satisfy study permit and immigration requirements
  • Prevent you from meeting the graduation residency requirement (see below)

To find your results, view our Finding Your Results guide (pdf).

Refund Eligibility

Refunds are not provided for individual courses that have been approved through credit transfer or equivalency for full-time students.

You may be eligible for a refund if you:

  • Received more than 40% of your term credits through RPL
  • Paid full-time tuition and are now a part-time student
  • For full details, refer to the Refunds page
RPL Credit Limits (Graduation Residency Requirement)

You can earn up to 75% of your total program credits through RPL. This means that at least 25% of your program credits must be completed at ½ûÂþÌìÌÃ.

In the event you have been awarded more than 75% of your program credit you must choose which RPL to accept.

Impact on Full-Time Status

You are considered a full-time student if you are enrolled in at least 60% of your program’s full-time course load per term. This means:

  • You can complete up to 40% of your term credits through RPL without affecting your status.
  • If you exceed this amount, you may be reclassified as a part-time student.

Important: Changing to part-time status may impact:

  • Student loans
  • Sponsorship or funding
  • Study permits, or post-graduate work permit (PGWP) eligibility.  (see section below for international students)
Rejecting Approved Credit

If the approved amount of transfer credit and/or equivalency credit result in a negative impact to your loan, funding, or immigration status, and you choose to reject approved credit:

  1. Email RPL@nbcc.ca or reply to your RPL Application ticket.
  2. Copy the Administrative Assistant in your school
  3. Include:
    • Course code and course name you wish to reject
    • Your Service Request (application) number
    • A clear statement that you are rejecting approved credit

Act quickly to avoid:

  • Removal from your course
  • The credit appearing on your transcript
International Students

If you are an international student, it is especially important to understand how RPL may affect your status.

To maintain your study permit, you must remain a full-time student. If credit awarded though RPL reduces your course load below 60%, you may be considered part-time, which could affect:

  • Your study permit compliance
  • Your eligibility to work on-campus or off-campus
  • Your eligibility

When you receive the results of your RPL application it is important to carefully review the credits received to ensure your full-time student status is not impacted:

  • Carefully review your approved credit to see if it will impact your full-time student status
  • Speak with an Academic Advisor for program academic guidance.
  • Consider speaking with an ½ûÂþÌìÌà Immigration Advisor immigration@nbcc.ca

It is your responsibility to ensure that accepting RPL credits does not affect your immigration status.
