Refugee Claimant Applications

A Refugee Claimant is a person who has applied for refugee protection status while in Canada and is waiting for a decision on their claim from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.

Refugee Claimants are considered international applicants and must apply through the . As per Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) policy, Refugee Claimant applicants, and like other ½ûÂþÌìÌà international applicants:

  • You are required to obtain a study permit for engaging in education or training that is more than 6 months in duration ().
  • You are not required to obtain a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) for your study permit application.
  • You are required to pay  ½ûÂþÌìÌà International Tuition & Fees.  ½ûÂþÌìÌà will not retroactively grant tuition fee changes to Canadian/Permanent Resident tuition and fee rates if your status changes while you are a student. ½ûÂþÌìÌà will adjust tuition fees for subsequent terms after receiving proof of permanent resident status

Refugee Protection Status Applications

When a person, inland or overseas, is determined to be a Convention refugee or protected person, they are said to have refugee protection status in Canada. Refugee protection is given to a person in accordance with the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

While most of the admission process for Applicants with Refugee Protection Status is like Canadian/ Permanent Resident applicants and you apply through the , here is some other important information to help in your application process:

  • You are required to obtain a study permit for engaging in education or training that is more than 6 months in duration ().
  • You are not required to obtain a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) for your study permit application.
  • You will be eligible for ½ûÂþÌìÌà Canadian/Permanent Residents Tuition & Fees
  • You will need to provide proof of Refugee Protection Status to ½ûÂþÌìÌà in the Application Portal when applying.  You will also need to provide this information when you apply for your study permit.
  • You are required to demonstrate English Language Requirements.
